Relentless by Tim Grover

Why did I buy this book?

Every now and then I will go on Amazon and add books I find interesting to my Book List. Rarely do I buy them via Amazon because most of the time I find them in thrift stores (I sell books online therefore sift through thousands on a weekly basis). But, from time-to-time I will find a book that jumps out and I need to order.

Relentless was most recently that book.

After reading into the author and the subject, I impulse bought this book and with the power of Prime shipping, it was in my hands in 2 days.

This book was very easy to read being only 232 pages and the text was very easy on the eyes.

Background of the Author

Tim Grover’s is most notable for working with and training top-tier athletes including Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant and many more. His training and techniques have been proven effective time and time again. Though he was unable to reach the athletic levels of the players he has trained, his show of mental toughness and willingness to do whatever it takes gives him the “Cleaner” status of all the greats he’s worked with.

General Takeaways

Tim did something I’ve never seen an author do before. Instead of making the chapters 1,2,3 and so on, he explains that every topic of the “Relentless 13” are equally important. So every chapter (each of the Relentless 13 points) is #1. For me, I felt I was reading the book and absorbing the material differently. Strangely cool.

When it comes to people, both in business and personal, there are 3 levels:

  1. Cooler
  2. Closer
  3. Cleaner

The “Cooler” gets the ball for the buzzer beater but fails to make the shot under pressure.

The “Closer” makes the buzzer beater to win and is quick to bask in the glory. You know he’s going to party and celebrate the big win.

The “Cleaner” without a doubt makes the buzzer beater. But, instead of celebrating, he’s going to practice a couple hours after because he missed 5 of his 50 shots instead of missing 0. He’s never content – ever.

Business Applications

Throughout my life, I’ve been notorious for starting things but not always finishing. Starting something new is great because you immediately have something to show from starting a project. The middle part is the hardest because you won’t always see progression. This is where most people (any myself) stop.

Trusting the process is key because the feeling of finishing something you started will always beat the feeling of starting something and giving up halfway.

The largest thing I took from the book was that is if you want to become the top of your field, your work is never done. You can always do better, get better results, complete things faster and more efficiently. For me, I need to Not Give Up.

Significant Quotes

Every time you think you can’t, you have to do it anyways.

Final Thoughts

Obviously I’ve left a lot of this book out because I would be doing a dis-service to Tim if I tried to whittle down this great book into a small book review. If you’re wanting AND willing to take yourself to the next level in whatever you do, I highly recommend this book. Otherwise, you know where the door is.

I hope you enjoyed this book review and until next time, Don’t Wait, Dive In!
