I will always remember when I watched my first YouTube video and I was immediately trying to figure out a way to record goofy videos of myself to upload. Unfortunately I only had access to a super old Camcorder that wasn’t able to connect to my equally super old computer. Trying to upload a video online with dial-up connection? Forget about it. Watching a 3 minute video took hours to buffer, but I digress.
Once we upgraded to broadband, I was finally surfing “The Ocean”. I distinctly remember watching videos about ways to make online and I would spend hours and hours surfing through these videos just thinking how cool it would be to make money online.
Then by accident, it fell in my lap.
I had created a YouTube channel in early 2009 and started posting just random videos only because I loved to film and create. I was aware of making money via YouTube but that wasn’t the mentality. I thought getting 100-200 views on a video was the coolest thing ever.
It was around 2009-2010 and the craze was “Reaction” videos. So, bored with my cousin we made a video of me getting angry playing CoD Black Ops and smashing the Xbox. This was November 28th.
Fast forward to about June and I noticed that video was up to like 50,000 views. What?! A day or two later, 80k. Then 150k, 250k. It was starting to blow up.
Then, the first check hit. 👌
Around August I signed up for the YouTube Partnership Program and Monetized that video. The cash is just flowing in. I wasn’t even old enough at the time to “officially” cash in so I had to try and explain to my parents what all this was about. Obviously they had no clue and didn’t believe me.
The video ended up being viewed 6.3 millions times. In 2012 I created a second video that has gotten roughly 2 million views, not bad.
I eventually sold the rights to both of the videos in 2015 for a lump sum of $1250. I was given the option for a monthly percentage and I’m glad I didn’t choose that because the videos haven’t gotten more than a couple views a month for the past couple years.
The power of the Internet is EXTREMELY strong!
At the time in 2010 I didn’t fully grasp the power and depth of the internet until about 1.5 years ago. My goal is to start something and see where it takes me.
